Brussels Sprouts

Neither Jesse or I have ever really eaten brussels sprouts. A few tastes as kids, but nothing memorable. One thing we knew was that we were supposed to hate them. So we took that as a challenge and grew them.

They are such an interesting plant, a lot of people don't know how they grow or what to do with them.
Perhaps they are just afraid of them, the smell, the supposed gas that comes along with them. But perhaps people just don't know how to cook them.

Our good friend Hollie is a long time lover and big promoter of brussels sprouts, she gave me some suggestions on how I should cook them and assured me to not be afraid. So last week we whipped up a batch and didn't regret it one bit! The whole family (minus Margaret) ate a pile. And the kids have been begging me to make them ever since.

Simply prepared brussels sprouts:

• In a frying pan put butter, onions and garlic.
• Cut the sprouts in half length-wise; place in frying pan cut side down.
• When the brussels sprouts brown in the bottom edge flip them over for a few more minutes (allow them to soften a bit).
• Put a bit of water in the bottom of the pan to steam-fry.
• Salt to taste

Eat up and enjoy.

    our fave way to eat brussel sprouts: throw them in a food chopper along with a lot of shallots until minced. Saute in a pan with LOTS of olive oil and butter. Salt and pepper to taste. Divine! Our kids DOWN this simple recipe.

  2. They taste delicious with dried cherries as well (balances some of the bitterness.)

  3. This is a great way to prep sprouts- we like to substitute lemon juice for the water. It makes them even more delicious. . . Also, if you haven't roasted them yet. There is almost nothing better. Oil, salt and pepper in the oven uncovered 1t 350 for 45-60. Delicious! Thanks for featuring our favorite veg!

  4. Our kids had the same notion that nobody likes Brussels sprouts, but we prepare them roasted like WT and now it's even requested for birthday dinners when they get to choose absolutely anything for dinner! Straight from the stock....doesn't get any better than that.

  6. I love brussel sprouts any way you cook them. I tried growing them again this year but for some reason they just end up looking like tall skinny cabbages with no sprouts.I wish I knew what the trick is to get sprouts!

  7. Brussel sprouts are so good! I tried a recipe with freshly squeezed lemon juice and bits of pancetta and that got me hooked on them.

  8. try shallots, garlic and nuts, like walnuts or pine nuts. Or roast them with stock rather than water. Delish!
